IP Research Specialist and Researcher

Dr Jyoti Lavania

From the bench to the patent landscape.

Jyoti Lavania — scientist, researcher, IP specialist

A rare intersection of deep technical expertise and strategic IP acumen. My doctoral research gave me a technical foundation that most IP professionals simply do not have. Years spent working with real experimental data, building transport models, and understanding what rigorous scientific evidence actually looks like. That background is what I bring to every patent search, FTO analysis, and prior art evaluation I do.

I have led IP work at one of India's fastest-growing wearable health companies, and currently lead the research pipeline at a stealth US startup in digital health. I also independently consult at Uravu Labs in Bangalore, a company whose mission I genuinely believe in. I research, I analyse, I write, and I understand the science behind every claim.

My Story

Three chapters, one career

The Scientist
01
The Scientist

Seven years behind the bench. A PhD in Biotechnology focused on solvent-resistant nanofiltration membranes for rice bran oil processing. I screened alternate solvents to replace hexane, studied solvent transport through membranes, and built mathematical models to understand what was happening at a fundamental level. This is where I learned to read the science deeply and developed the instinct to ask the right questions.

The Researcher

The Researcher

From the lab, I moved into clinical research and scientific documentation, working across trial protocols, real-world evidence, and healthcare technology platforms. Each role sharpened a different skill. Writing for regulatory audiences taught me precision. Working with clinical and data science teams taught me to communicate across disciplines. I was always drawn to the research side of the work, and eventually found that IP was where all of it came together.

The IP Specialist

The IP Specialist

Reading claims, evaluating novelty, understanding prior art. Working across the US, UK, EU, Canada, and India has taught me that good IP analysis looks the same everywhere. Precise, evidence-backed, and deeply connected to the underlying science. This is where my research background stops being a detour and starts being the point.

Experience

Professional background

My career has taken an unusual path. From membrane science research to clinical trial documentation to IP strategy. I think that breadth is genuinely useful. I understand what researchers are trying to protect, I know how to read the science behind a claim, and I can communicate across the gap between R&D teams and the IP process.
